About this role

The Medical Officer of the Day (MOD), a Physician II role, performs admission work-ups to facilitate the admission process including complete evaluations for medical/legal opinions for official proceedings. Exercises clinical privileges granted by the Hospital Director as detailed in the Clinical Privileges Form. Performs medical screening of admissions, including physician-to-physician communication when indicated for additional clinical concerns.

Performs a comprehensive psychiatric history and complete physical examination on assigned patients. Orders and reviews appropriate laboratory, radiological and other diagnostic procedures, psychological evaluations, surgical and medical consultations. Documents all progress notes, re-certifications, retention reviews, and treatment orders in patient’s medical record.

Conducts ward rounds with charge nurse to monitor mental and physical changes which may require treatment modification. Confers with patients’ relatives, including proxy decision-makers, to inform them of patient’s condition, changes in status and treatment recommendations. Confers with consultants to ensure accurate interpretations and timely consideration of their recommendations.

Performs in-house medical consultations as requested by other staff physicians within scope of clinical privileging. Participates in commitment and recommitment hearings as appropriate and attends medical staff meetings. Completes all assigned courses in the Knowledge Center as required by Joint Commission, DBHDS, OSHA and CMS.

Requirements

  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in Virginia
  • Completion of accredited medical residency program
  • Eligibility for clinical privileges in psychiatry and general medicine
  • Experience conducting psychiatric histories and physical examinations
  • Knowledge of laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic procedures
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission, DBHDS, OSHA, and CMS requirements
  • Ability to provide medical opinions on legal status and competency

  • Confer with patients’ relatives and proxy decision-makers to inform of condition and treatment recommendations
  • Provide patient and family education as required
  • Attend medical staff meetings and complete required annual training in the Knowledge Center
