About this role

Reporting to the division president and as a member of the division leadership team, the VP, Chief Medical Officer is accountable for clinical performance improvement. This includes promotion of clinical appropriateness, reduction of unwarranted clinical variation, and clinical resource and outcomes management. Coordinated oversight of hospitalists and patient safety/quality related activities are key responsibilities.

The role involves oversight of Accreditation/Regulatory Standards, Infection Prevention and Control, Clinical Service Line Development, and Utilization Review/Utilization Management. Responsibilities extend to Clinical Standardization, Clinical Informatics, Clinical Integration, and functioning as Administrator-on-call for the hospital. Knowledge of Lean/Six Sigma methodologies supports executive sponsorship for projects and RCAs.

Sentara Princess Anne Hospital is a 174-bed acute care hospital providing quality clinical outcomes, experienced physicians, advanced technology, and a patient-centered approach. It serves southern Virginia Beach, neighboring Chesapeake, and Northeastern North Carolina communities. As a Primary Stroke Center and Magnet hospital, it specializes in orthopedic and spine care, heart, vascular, advanced imaging, gynecological, comprehensive breast care, and family maternity with neonatal intensive care.

The CMO acts as liaison to Sentara Medical Group and surrounding Patient-Centered Medical Homes, with involvement in marketing, population health strategies, and key strategy discussions. Understanding of laws like HIPAA, HCQIA, and HITECH Act is essential. Opportunities include leadership in physician contracts, recruiting, alternative payment models, and system responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Medical Doctor (MD) with Virginia Department of Health Professionals (VADHP) state license
  • Board certification in specialty required at time of hire, preferred ongoing recertification
  • 5 years of clinical practice experience required
  • 5 years of leadership experience preferred in an acute care, inpatient hospital setting
  • Knowledgeable of contemporary practice issues within medicine and outcomes measurement of clinical quality and utilization
  • Familiar with all aspects of hospital operations
  • Understanding of Lean/Six Sigma methodologies
  • Knowledge of laws such as HIPAA, HCQIA, and HITECH Act
