About this role

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. As Operation Theatre Nurse, you promote and ensure delivery of high-quality patient care meeting national and international standards, taking operational context into account. Focus is on strengthening nursing care and infection prevention in the Gaza Hospital Program surgical team, particularly the Stump Revision project.

Provide high-quality care to admitted patients following ICRC nursing guidelines in cooperation with the surgical team. Prepare OT lists in consultation with OT Nurse and Surgeon, distribute to wards for patient preparation, and review pre-operative checklists. Ensure operation suite is ready for emergency or scheduled operations and perform roles of Scrub Nurse, First Assistant, or Circulating Nurse as needed.

Work in close collaboration with Mobile OT Nurse for ward rounds and timely surgical patient care. Collaborate effectively with Ministry of Health (MoH), Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), and project hospital staff. May work in ICRC-run Rafah Field Hospital with limited resources and challenging conditions, requiring coordination for a positive environment.

Participate in delivering training and coaching programmes to measurably improve patient care quality. Engage in capacity building efforts for MoH staff. Contribute to emergency-preparedness and response measures, ensuring rational use of resources and accurate data collection.

Requirements

  • Experience in operation theatre nursing within surgical teams
  • Proficiency in scrub nurse, circulating nurse, and first assistant roles
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Ability to deliver training and coaching to nursing staff
  • Competence in emergency preparedness and response in challenging environments
  • Skills in patient documentation and data collection
  • Familiarity with maintaining hygiene standards in clinical settings
  • Experience managing nursing and auxiliary staff

Responsibilities

  • Provides high-quality care to admitted patients, following the ICRC’s nursing guidelines and in cooperation with other members of the surgical team
  • Participates in delivering a training/coaching programme to measurably improve the quality of patient care
  • Promotes a clean and safe patient environment and ensures hygiene conditions are maintained in line with ICRC standards
  • Prepares OT list in consultation with the OT Nurse / Surgeon and distributes to surgical wards
  • Ensures the operation suite is ready for emergency / scheduled operations
  • Reviews the pre-operative checklist and other vital documents of patients scheduled for surgery
  • Performs the roles of Scrub Nurse / First assistant / Circulating Nurse as per the need
  • Supervises the cleaning staff and participates in stocking up of supplies
