The Dietitian – Outpatient (RD Eligible) provides evidence-based nutrition care under the supervision of a credentialed Registered Dietitian (RD). This role supports nutrition screening, assessment, care planning, patient education, and clinical documentation in an outpatient setting. It contributes to improved patient outcomes by addressing nutrition-related health needs.

Daily responsibilities include conducting nutrition screenings, developing care plans in collaboration with an RD, and providing individualized counseling to patients and families. Staff monitor progress, document care per standards, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for coordinated referrals. They also support education materials and community programming.

This position operates in a busy outpatient clinic environment at Bozeman Health, requiring sound judgment, patience, and professional demeanor. Employees exercise tact, discretion, and maintain confidentiality while handling multiple deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills facilitate effective communication within the care team.

RD Eligibles prepare to obtain Registered Dietitian credentialing and progressively assume expanded responsibilities upon certification. They must gain Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach certification within 12 months. The role involves ongoing learning of nutrition science, guidelines, and best practices.

Regular attendance is essential, with potential for extended hours, weekends, or on-call duties to meet patient needs. Staff attend meetings, training, and organizational activities while performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field from an accredited program
  • Completion of an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited supervised practice program
  • Eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
  • Ability to obtain RD credential within six (6) to twelve (12) months of hire
  • Ability to obtain Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach certification within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Knowledge of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) principles
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Experience with MNT coding and billing (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct nutrition screenings and assist with comprehensive nutrition assessments under supervision
  • Develop and implement nutrition care plans in collaboration with a Registered Dietitian
  • Provide individualized nutrition counseling and education to patients and families
  • Monitor patient progress and communicate updates to the care team
  • Document nutrition care in accordance with organizational, regulatory, and billing standards
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care and facilitate referrals
  • Support development of nutrition education materials and community-based programming
  • Participate in community outreach events and health promotion activities as appropriate
