About this role

The Department of Neurosurgery seeks an experienced surgical coder for highly specialized diagnosis and procedural coding. This role covers all operative procedures and inpatient consulting services by faculty, including those at Gainesville and Halifax Regional Medical Center. The ideal candidate possesses thorough knowledge of anatomy, surgical and medical terminology coding, insurance billing requirements, and department/hospital procedures.

Review operative reports and progress notes to identify billable services, applying appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes. Confirm physician attestation statements and ensure no unsigned or missing operative records. Enter charges for surgical cases and non-surgical inpatient events while verifying patient demographics and insurance data.

Provide guidance and education to attending surgeons, fellows, and residents on coding issues. Research questions using professional associations, federal/private payer guidelines, and coding networks. Meet regularly with Department Chair or Administrator to address individual or product line coding concerns.

Conduct chart reviews for regulatory compliance, coding accuracy, and capture of all services. Monitor and correct TES edits in the Epic system, setting up guarantor accounts and adding insurance details. Work within a department committed to comprehensive neurosurgical care, research, and ACGME-accredited training programs.

Requirements

  • Experienced surgical coder
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy
  • Thorough knowledge of surgical and medical terminology coding
  • Working knowledge of billing requirements of insurance carriers
  • Working knowledge of operating procedures of the department and hospitals
  • Proficiency in ICD-10 and CPT coding
  • Familiarity with Epic system for charge entry and edits
  • Ability to research coding issues using payer guidelines and professional resources
