Pathology Technicians provide technical assistance in the laboratories, assisting technologists, technicians, pathologists’ assistants and pathologists. They handle related equipment including maintenance, clean work areas, and stock supplies.

In the Histology/Gross Laboratory, assist in obtaining biological samples for study and prepare tissues for processing and examination under the direction of pathologists. Perform complex histological procedures using techniques to gross, embed, perform microtomy, and stain to make tissue slides used for diagnosis. Within the Clinical Laboratory, collect, prepare and process specimens while ensuring accuracy and quality of laboratory data.

PM Shift with varying start times from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Full-time positions work every third weekend, holidays three per year, and five to six on-call weekends per year. Part-time works every other weekend with similar holiday and on-call requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or other related field with 30 combined semester hours of biological science and chemistry
  • One year previous laboratory experience preferred
  • Ability to perform complex histological procedures under supervision
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen collection, preparation, and processing
  • Familiarity with entering laboratory orders and results
  • Skills in maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring work area cleanliness
  • Competence in phlebotomy (on-the-job training provided)

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance in the laboratories
  • Perform laboratory duties to assist technologists, technicians, pathologists’ assistants and pathologists
  • Handle related equipment including maintenance, clean work area and stock supplies
  • Assist in reference lab work including packaging, mailing, tracking, and report filing
  • Assist in obtaining biological samples and prepare tissues for processing and examination
  • Perform complex histological procedures including gross, embed, microtomy, and stain tissue slides
  • Collect, prepare and process specimens in the Clinical Laboratory setting
  • Perform waived tests and/or phlebotomy as required
