About this role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Clinical Coder to join our Health Information Services team at Macquarie University Health. Reporting to the Manager, Health Information Services, you will code inpatient healthcare records accurately and timely. This supports hospital funding, performance measurement, research, and health service planning.

You will apply extensive knowledge of ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS, casemix and DRG grouping using 3M Codefinder and electronic resources. Achieve an indicative workload of 30–35 separations per day while maintaining high coding accuracy. Liaise with Clinical Documentation Specialists and clinicians to resolve queries and ensure data integrity.

Work closely with clinicians, Clinical Documentation Specialists, billing teams, and health information professionals. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, audit activities, and workflow optimisation. Perform cancer registration and maintain logs of coding issues using SharePoint.

Requirements

  • Experienced clinical coder with strong background in tertiary and/or teaching hospital environment, ideally within the private hospital sector
  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS, casemix and DRG grouping
  • Proficiency in 3M Codefinder and associated electronic coding resources
  • Strong analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Confident working both autonomously and collaboratively
  • Effective communication with clinicians and stakeholders

Responsibilities

  • Accurately classify diseases and procedures for inpatient episodes using 3M Codefinder, ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS, coding authorities and National Coding Standards
  • Achieve individual performance targets with an indicative workload of 30–35 separations per day while maintaining high coding accuracy
  • Liaise closely with Clinical Documentation Specialists and clinicians to resolve coding queries and clarify documentation
  • Ensure completeness of the medical record by identifying documentation gaps and requesting additional clinical information
  • Perform cancer registration in line with reporting requirements
  • Maintain accurate logs of coding issues, reviews, and uncoded episodes using SharePoint
  • Actively participate in quality improvement activities, including daily PICQ reviews, internal and external coding audits
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report coding trends, performance metrics, and emerging issues
